Freestyle FAQ's

Freestyle Frequently
Asked Questions

Is it possible to use a Metro as the donor vehicle?

The use of a Metro as a donor vehicle is entirely possible, it is even a good idea as many were fitted with 1275cc engines, and all Metros were fitted with disk brakes at the front. The ball joints from a Mk 1 Metro will fit directly into Mini suspension arms, Mk 2 ball joints will require replacing with Mk 1 ball joints. However, you will need to source a Mini front Subframe, radiator and non disk brake front hubs from a Mini amongst other things.

Is it possible to fit an automatic gearbox and engine to the Freestyle?

We believe it is possible, however we haven't tried this ourselves. It may be necessary to source a longer gearbox cable and slight modifications will need to be made to the chassis to attach the change selector.

How do I fit a speedo to the car for the SVA?

There are two ways around this.

  1. It is possible to have a long speedo cable made by Speedy Cables. If you don't use the donor vehicle wheels your speedo will need to be re-calibrated due to the difference in the rolling radius, this can be carried out by Speedy Cables. (020 7226 9228)
  2. It is possible to utilise a cycle computer with the sensor fitted to the front hub. ABS will supply documentary evidence, which should satisfy the SVA Examiner when it comes to SVA time.

Will I end up with a 'Q' plate?

Not necessarily, if the vehicle is built from one donor then it uses enough parts to be registered with an age related plate. (You will require the V5 from the donor for this)

Can I keep the registration number from the donor car?

The only way to keep the original number plate from the donor is to place the number on retention with the DVLA and get a replacement registration for the donor, SVA and register the completed kit. Once this has been done it is possible to carry out a cherished transfer. We recommend that you consult the Vehicle Registration Office in your area for further information

If I use a tax exempt mini as the donor, will the kit be tax exempt?

Sadly this is not possible as the tax exempt status remains with the chassis. This will obviously remain with the mini shell as this is the chassis in the case of a Mini.

Is it possible to buy the basic kit and find suitable mudguards and lights to pass the SVA?

This is entirely possible, however you will have to research the requirements for the SVA more thoroughly to see what is required. The mudguards and lamps supplied in the SVA kits are designed to pass on all current requirements.

What size of wheels can I use?

Wheels from 10x3.5" to 15x7" will fit on the kit depending on your requirements. If you are using Mini/Metro hubs you will require wheels with a P.C.D. of 4" with 4 studs.
