Rear Tracking

Simple question, hopefully simple answer.

How do I go about getting my rear tracking straight? I can measure the distance between the front of the wheels & I can measure the distance between the rear of the wheels, but that won't help me if they are both pointing to the left by 5 degrees for instance.

Hi,

Use a length of wood long enough to put against the rear wheeel rim accross the middle, and able to touch the front tyre. when setting the rear tracking, put the wood against the rim, note where the edge of the wood touches the front tyre, and if they touch their respective front in the same position accross the tread, then they are tracked the same.

alternativly, mesure from the inside of the wheel rim to the subframe. get this the same, and job done.

another way is have two lenghts of string, parrallel down each side of the car, and mesure off the string to each of the 4 wheel rims. this way can be as accurate as any set up in a garage, but you must ensure the strings are parrellel, spaced eqally from the hubs.

Isn't that the 64 million dollar question how do you ensure they are PARRALLEL with the true centre of the car.

I did it on a flat garage floor using magnetic laser levels to create lines whilst being stuck to the box section part on the sides if the car and then measured between them with chalk. I also used one on the frint bulk head and made sure they all intersected at right angles.

JML laser levers are less than £10

i had the front and rears tracked at my local tyre depot using their lazer set up which was ok once i had pointed out to the confused grease monkey that because the lazers were mounted back to front on the rear wheels that toe out was now reading as toe in and that the settings he had come up with was likely to send me lurching under the nearest lorry never mind though cause his boss didnt charge me after i took him for a spin
