Which wheel bearings

Hi All

Just a question I am sure someone can clear up for me....

before I go and order the incorrect bearings which ones do I need to be getting?

I ask this just because I am a bit mixed up as on a mini its straight forward due to wither front or rear and either disc or drum brake...easy right!?
but on the freestyle it seems to be effectively 2 front ends but do I need front or rear drum type for the rear hubs? (engine end)

I am guessing front drum wheel bearings but can anyone confirm this before I go ahead with my next parts order?

If it's standard Freestyle it uses the modified rear brake drums on front hubs at the rear, so for the bearings it's standard fronts all the way round, how many do you need as I think I have a brand new one in the workshop, I can look in tomorrow.
 
Mine is the pendulum pedal freestyle frame (newer model?) if that's the best way to tell?

Yes it's got the modded back plates on the rear (hole cut out larger) with brake drum front hubs

I need a full car set really as I have taken all of them out to clean up and paint the hubs etc.

The fronts were the taper type for the discs so that's easy enough to tell it was just the rears I wasn't sure which are the correct ones to order.
 
I don't think the taper bearings will work on the rears, I defo remember taper bearings on the front discs and non taper on the rear drums.

Too long for me to remember but as they are just front hubs, surely they use the same bearings?
 
There must be a difference between disc and drum hubs. Just looking through my build guide. I remember asking the question at the time too. I couldn't afford to buy the wrong bearings.

I think there is definitely a difference between front subframe disc and drum swivel hubs.

Use these GHK1018 on the rear



Use these on the fronts GHK1140


It is confusing as they are both front subframe but the difference is they never made a taper bearing set for the drums.

Ignore this if you are doing a rear disc conversion but you will need a friend at a machine shop to adapt the swivel hub and MK2 Golf calipers are like hens teeth and MK4 didn't work for me, I wanted rear discs as the metro turbo 4 pots lock up the front end as all the weight is at the back. When you get a feeling what it was like when we had no ABS and you had to read the road it is fine. 😃
 
That's what I suspected would be the case. It was, like was said, a bit confusing as there aren't any taper bearings just the 'straight' type which I thought are the ones to use.

I just needed to check before I get my next order of parts in for wheel bearings and brake parts
