Not sure on the implications of this, but the Ford Sierra sender unit is top mounted and could also double up as a fuel return and breather as it has two inlets/outlets.

How are we thinking this tank will be put in?  From the bottom and slid up?

That looks the best way at the mo --- filler projecting anywhere will stop it sliding in from the side ( side filler would foul the suspension gear)
