2008 Road Trips

OK,

i have been thinking about possible weekend events in the Buggy for this year. Was originally going to LeMans in June but just found out that it will clash with Matt's work experience  so can't go.

There was some concensus that a route round the UK following the coast would be good but would take to long and cost to much.

So my ideas are :

21 Counties in 3 days. Plot a route that takes us thru 21 counties but only going into each county once. My first attempt at plotting a route came out at about 700 miles covering most of the Midlands, Wales, upto Derbyshire and down to Somerset. Obviously lots of driving satying away from motorways etc and carrying all the gear you need for camping etc.

Weekend in Wales - pick a nice camp site to use a base - somewhere in mid wales. Arrive on friday set up camp. Then on saturday and sunday pick a route that uses the smallest out in the middle of no whwere roads we can find for some nice driving and possibly some off roading as well and of course a nice pub or two.

Once I have sorted out some more of the details and dates I will let you know.

Richard,

If you cannot make the le Mans 24hrs have you considered doing the Classic instead.

I have done the 24hrs 4 times now and quite fancy the Classic instead, my problem will be work commitments.

My brother has done both a few times and says the Classic is better and I have heard quite a few others say this.

Scotland is always on my list of places to go and will definitely feature in one of my road trips at some point but its a long way for me and to do it justice we would need more than a weekend. Like most people my employer likes to limit the number of days off I get and for 2008 most of them are already set aside for family holidays etc.

Hence my trips this year will be have to be at weekends.

If I'm allowed out after when the new baby arrives I'll be there... But I've only been given permission for the Stoneleight, Newark and Donington shows so far.... I think these may be revoked, if the little one if more than a handfull,. but I won't know until he arrives...

Wales sounds good to me, I used to cycle a lot arround the lanes near Aberystwyth, and there used to be a good beach a little further on than borth where we used to go car surfing.......

Aberystwyth does look like a good location to be able to explore the coast and the mountains. Have been looking at a couple of camp sites on the internet but they all say No group bookings from all Male or Female groups, Families only etc.

Should not be a problem if we book separately :D Looks like my parents are coming in the camper van and Matt & I in the buggy so that takes care of the family booking for me :D

This place looks a bit commercialised but would be OK for a weekend.

May bank holiday weekend 24-26 looks like it would work for me but hmm bank holiday traffic ???

Doh - that weekends out - Matt will be doing his AS exams. Towards the end of July looks a better option for us.

I am planning to do

Stoneleigh - May 4/5
Newark - June 21/22
Bruntingthorpe (new show) - July 5/6
Stafford - September 13/14

Need to book a few track days as well for the Firefox. Need more weekends and less work

Is the Stafford show a Kit or mini show?

I'll be at all the other shows you mentioned, and may go to MITP in August too

I hope to get out on a road trip one weekend if poss, but I can't plan that far ahead at the moment.

Stafford is a Kit car show. It always used to be the first show of the year normally in March but stopped happening a couple of years ago. I guess they are trying to revive it.

I think it would take a couple of weeks to get round all of them.... But a few could be fit into a weekend, especialy if we look at ones that are not too far apart....

not sure if anyone would be interested, but i took a landrover defender to shropshire a few days ago,and got talking to the owner who has a mate that is a lord(not a posh one by the sound of him on the phone)....but,to cut a long story short,i/we've been offered the use of several thousand acres of land/green lanes etc near to 'craven arms',with free accomodation or camping thrown in if anyone fancies a free weekend?? let me know if anyone interested and i'll get it sorted.i think its about 20miles south of shrewsbury, and east of the border with mid-wales.might also have an empty seat in mine if it goes ahead,as most of my mates have joined the brown trouser brigade re buggy trips.

Might take some coordination.. but if we get our fingers out and commit to something, i could see what the availability of Curborough sprint track is on say... the monday morning. It's only a spit from Shrewsbury and my sister lives there so I could make her ship bacon butties in!

But seriously, her other half is big in the hill climb/sprint circuit thing.. so he's got the contacts to sort out the hire.
