Engine Number Issues

Hi,

Does anyone know how to find out the engine size from the engine number ???

As you are probably aware the guy that had "Mary" before me, boiled the engine beyond repair

I have the engine number of the engine that is now in, but that is not good enough for the DVLA!!

I need either "a receipt of purchase on headed paper from the garage, confirming the engine number, engine size, type of fuel for the replacement engine, if one has been fitted" or "written confirmation from the manufacturer stating the engine number and engine size" ???

Any advice would be greatfully accepted!!

Cheers,

Steve.

Mini engine numbers and metro contain all the information you need to know what size it was when it was built and what set up it used to.  That said not many mini engines will still be those configurations now.

If the engine has the number stamped on it (or riveted to it) then all you need is to present it to the local DVLA for them to inspect / confirm  (they will just look at the plate on the engine but may also want to look at the chassis number too)

Mini engines that are sold these days are going to be second hand and many of them have been skimmed as part of a rebuild process so they are unlikely to still have the original plate attached.

If you haven't got a plate you can get one made up by mini mail and buy the no tamper rivets too and then attach it to your engine.  I did this after mine was rebuilt.

So that said if you want to know what your engine was and you have got the number this link will help

minimail.co.uk sell engine number plates, and also an embossing service (plate + number embossing £15.20), they also supply the rivets to fix plate on / ararldite and a bit of artistic licience will suffice

Not that I'm suggesting you do anything illegal

Enough said !

Sorry Simon, just read all of your post !

Steve,

Post up the first 6 characters of the engine number that will be enough to tel what size it is, although the guy who sold it to you reckoned it was a 998. If he is a trader like he claimed & has headed papaer ask him to write you a receipt for work done to install it.

Simon,
Thanks for the link, and as Alan said it is a 998cc ;)

Good point Alan, I'll see if I can get hold for the chap i bought it off, if I can't, I've got enough info to fudge it!!!

Engine number is 99HD27

The engine is from a 1988 Metro, will this be a leaded or unleaded engine ???
I'm running on leaded at the moment, just to be on the safe side!

Thanks for all the help chaps,  ;D

Well that will depend on the head...

Anything made after 1990 would have been and 998cc engined variants prior to this with engine numbers beginning 99HG30,31,32 or 33, 99H/F15 or 16, 99H/E20,21 or 22, 99H/D81 or latterly LBB10089 or LBB10175 are also safe.

That said it may or may not have had unleaded valves and guides fitted since, but as other mini owners will tell you if it hasn't been rebuilt by now there will be so much coating on it and the metal will have been hardened that using unleaded shouldn't make any difference.

The problem you will have is knowing if your head was the original head on the block or if it has been swapped.

Thanks Simon,

How much would it cost to make it into an unleaded engine ???
What is envolved in sorting this??

Cheers,

Steve.

Too much, I think it's about £30 per valve so £240, in my opinion you'd be better putting that towars a 1275 or bigger

Good point Alan,

I'd then get a proper engine, engine number and receipt!!!

Hopefully the DVLA will be satisfied!!!

I'll check the bay, unless anyone has a 1275 or bigger!!!!

Cheers,

Steve.

Check out the mini specialists in the mags. An unleaded recon head is about £150 exchange. As cheap as doing it yourself without the hassle.
