Fuel tank question

Quick one for those that have one.

Is Dave's behind the seat fuel tank alloy or steel?
Also is the useful space behind the seats completely taken up?

Cheers

Hi,

The behind the seats tanks are normally steel, and take up most of the usefull space, yet you can still get odds and ends around the tank.

Has any one got a picture of how much room is available hehind the seats? Been considering tank location and type and a pic would help.

I'll try to take one for you tomorrow, but working & not sure what time I am finishing. Not got passenger seat fitted so will take it across the car.

Alternatively I can get my hands on some 9 litre ex-fire extinguishers, which is what I have used, only cost a couple of quid but the postage will be the killer unless we can get a Freestyle train going.

Thanks Alan,
sounds an ideal time to get a pic, with one seat in. Thanks for the offer with the fire extinguishers, but I am keen to go for a frabricated ally tank as I want to fit the R1 fuel pump from the tank into the new one. Also keen to keep the weight and centre of gravity as low as poss.

Danny's buggy has/had a behind the seat tank, and from the pictures it doesn't take up a tremendous amount of room.
(FreeStyle_BuildManual/Manual/Dans buggy/Fuel tank)

But more modern pictures show a bright shiny extinguisher style tank.

Simon has a fabricated tank in his.

It's also been on my list of thinks to think about while I'm waiting for my garage to warm up LOL, along with planning my elastictrickery loom.

It depends on the seats....

I have just had a second tank made to fit behind the drivers seat, it has a 15L capacity. I already have a 10L cylinder both are made of steal my local metal fabricator made them. I've just built some electronics that use float switches to detect levels and a motorbike fuel pump to transfer the contents from the 15L back to the 10L

Cheers Alan,

Though all the links go to the same picture at the moment ;)
Looking good, have you got SVA booked yet?

Doh! try now, that's what you get for trying to be a smart arse & instead of copying & pasting each link, pasting the 1st 6 times & then forgetting to edit it.

Richard,

They look the DB's, but are you intending to use inertia seat belts? If so is there enough room at the outsides to fit them, bit difficult to see as there is no head-on photo.

Alan,

We are planning to use either 4 point or 3 point harnesses. There is no room for the inertia belts and as we are sitting on the floor the mounting point on the roll bar is probably too high up.

Hope to finish of the seat panels this week and will then look at the options for fitting the belts.

I have to admit that having a bare un-coated chassis does mean that we have a lot more options and makes adding extra brackets etc easy. However the disadvantage of course is that it went rusty very quickly and we have to strip it all down and get it painted / powder coated at some point.

hi there
those fuel tanks look great , just wondering one thing .with the size of the tanks did you put baffle plates in them.i once built a tank for a project i did and on my first test drive i only filled up about half just for testing.on the first corner i came to i nearly ended up in the ditch because of the fuel rushing to one side as the weight got shifted because of the corner.i then talked to a friend and was told about the baffle plates in normal tanks.

Yes we did weld in some baffle plates around the outlet pipe on each tank so should not get any problems with fuel surge/starvation.

Just had a call from my Dad to confirm that the Ali Chequer plate has arrived so we should be able to start working on the side panels and engine covers etc soon. Just need to schedule a Saturday morning at the factory when the boss is not there

I will try to post some pics of our "on the floor" seats at the weekend as they are almost finished.

Ian,

Fitted my seatbelts over the weekend & now the seat will not go back quite as far as it does in the pictures. I have angled the seats along the outside to get that extra little bit of leg room & they catch the inertia rolls, but we are only talking 10mm or so but it would mean the tank(s) could be slightly bigger.

Yes SVA booked, well form submitted & then another form sent to me to confirm it was amatuer built (they must know me LOL) & what bits had been used from the donor car, this was sent back Monday so just waiting now.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I was wondering if you can still get these? If you can let me know how much you want for one. I can send DHL to pick it up if you can put it in a box or wrap it up and write my address on it.
