Steering wheel boss

I know I am going to look a prat but how do I tell whether or not my boss is collapsible?

Esdebe, saw you bought your wheel and Boss from P&L which is close to me and I have used before for a number of things.

When I asked Dave at P&L for a collapsible Boss he said that he didn't know what I meant.

I bought a Mountney wheel and Boss, but I am not aware if it is classed as collapsible or not,

It has 2 solid circular pieces, 1 for mounting wheel and the other for fastening to steering column joined by seperate sections which are kinked in the middle, not a very good explanation I know but I don't know how to add a picture.

Also you said you bought a pad for the wheel from Merlin, what was this called as searches on their site under "pad" & "SVA pad" do not show anything.

Many thanks

Alan

Alan that's strange as I bought my collaspible boss from P&L, mind you it doesn't fit my Mountney steering wheel which they said it would

Their part code is B-Raid

yep that is the collapsible one.

if your chest/head hits the wheel the kinked bits bend and the wheel moves away a little taking the edge off the impact. (in theory)

Iank,

Thanks for that info, quick and helpful as ever.

The "M" type wheel shown on the link to Merlin Motorsport is the actual wheel that I have so it seems that I just need the pad for the middle now.

Once again many thanks,

Alan, Mine is similar to that one but seems to have a thicker base. I have always found Dave at P&L to be very helpful but when I told him I wanted a collapsible Boss he said he wasn't sure what I meant but sold me the Boss that I have, and when looking at it we both assumed that because of the design it was collapsible.

The guy who actualy owns the business sometimes serves in the shop and he may have had more idea, don't know who served you.

On a totaly seperate note when you go for your SVA is anyone going with you, if you need someone to carry tools and be a general dogsbody I would be happy to help if I can get the specific day off work as it would be useful to me to see one going through.

Thanks again

Alan

I 'think' that it is the fact it has arms inside the boss which will bend in the event of an accident.

I thought the guy who owned it was called Dave, I again thought it was the guy who always seems to be in the garage in the red overalls. It was the woman who's name I have forgot who served me.

Well I have told the wife she is going down in the Surf fully ladened with all the tools, tie-wraps, edge-trim & tow rope but you are more than welcome to come along. I'll send you a text tomorrow with the date, being childish & don't want to put it on here till I know how bad it has been

Alan,

Thanks for that I would like to come along as I am sure it would be helpful for me as I am hoping to book mine shortly.

Dave, the guy in the red overalls who is always about is actualy the mechanic but he also helps occasionaly in the shop. The guy who owns it is a thick set guy and the woman is his wife.

That's probably why she knew what it was as she appears to do a lot of stock ordering, or has done when I have been there.

The guy who owns it is also very keen on motorbikes and has restored some to a very high level, there are normaly some round the back of the shop were the loo is. On one occasion I was there for about an hour looking at the bikes, and I am not really into bikes, but he was showing me a number of the parts he had made himself and I think anyone would have appreciated the skill that had gone into it.

I spoke to a woman when I was buying my bos, they couldn't tell me if it was colapsibl or not and were rather consused about it, I asked them to tell me if the image on the web was an acurate picture of it as it was what the SVA man had described to me and I tought if that is what he wants to see then it will be fine by me. Basicaly the metal has fods in it that if hit with a body / head at high speed will squash out alowing the stearing wheel to take some of the impact.

Esdebe,

That fits with when I spoke to them.

Re: previous post - could you tell me what the SVA pad for the steering wheel that you got from Merlin was called as I cannot find anything in the catalogue that I have and have searched their website under pad and just got a series of brake pads.

Many thanks

Alan,

Please let me know, how about going halves? Looks like I need to get a new wheel to suit the boss for SVA purposes.

Well I'm up for that, not got a wheel to go with it have you? not sure which wheel I have but the boss is 100mm centres & the collaspable boss is only 75mm.

The pad fits the Traditional range (I think, based on its shape and the images of the steering wheels in the catalog) I don't know for sure as I bough it before I found the huricane one that comes with a center cover. I swaped the horn from the center for the centre of the original mini one...

The cover is for the centre of the wheel, and comes out over the three prongs / arms what ever they are called... It woudl cover both a 75 or a 100 boss. The important but is the layout of the prongs/ arms....

Alan,

No problem if I manage to get one lending it to you for the SVA test.

I am sure that once I have had mine tested there will be someone on this or one of the other forums willing to take it off my hands.

If you take the wheel back to P&L they are usually ok about taking stuff back, but if the issue is just about having a collapsible Boss for the SVA give me a ring.

Alan,

Spoke to Merlin and they advised me that the manufacturer has stopped making the pads, Merlin don't know why
